Just about 20 minutes from Ufford Park lies one of Suffolk’s most atmospheric landmarks: Framlingham Castle. It’s a perfect day‑trip or half‑day excursion from our resort.
Why Framlingham Castle is a Must-see
- Medieval roots & royal proclamation
The castle was first referenced in the 12th century, built by the Bigod family. Over time it passed through royal hands. Notably, Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen of England there in 1553. - Dramatic curtain walls & walks
Although the internal buildings were removed, the imposing curtain walls remain. You can walk along parts of the ramparts and enjoy sweeping views over Suffolk. - Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill”
Framlingham Castle achieved renewed fame when Ed Sheeran referenced it in his hit “Castle on the Hill.” The castle even features in the closing scenes of the music video.
In his song, Ed describes watching sunsets from the castle, revisiting the landscapes of his youth, a poignant love song to Suffolk. Since the song’s release, visitor numbers have risen, with younger visitors especially drawn to the castle’s star appeal. - Recent improvements & visitor experience
English Heritage has invested over £1.2 million in upgrading the visitor facilities, with plans to add a lift to all floors and complete the circuit of the wall walk.
For a fun twist, during refurbishment periods a temporary slide from the top of the walls to the courtyard has been installed.
